Coupla Prog - Sprite (1971)

COUPLA PROG from Baden-Baden/Germany is known for a melange of Kraut and Heavy Bluesrock, full of suspense, theatrical in parts, with a derivative sense of professionality. The band existed for nearly seven years and reached the peak from 1970 to 1972 for sure being homogenous with its style and without any commercial approach. The forerunner named "Wilde Reiter GmbH" played simple Soul/Rock covers and split in 1969. To compose something radically new COUPLA PROG was founded by four members: Hubert Donauer (drums), Reiner Niketta (bass, piano, vocals), Rolf Peters (guitar, vocals), Wolfgang Schindhelm (organ, guitar, trumpet, vocals). The new band name results from a shortened version of "A Couple Of Progs".The band's complete material is live played, pure, without reworking and overdubbing, the result of four sessions recorded at studio U1 of Radio Südwestfunk between 1970 and 1972. The first release by the german Long Hair Music label is the album 'Sprite' with early recordings from February 1970 and April 1971, strongly influenced by the new experimental post-beat phase. COUPLA PROG's centerpiece comes up with the Prog opera 'Edmundo Lopez'. Vocal-oriented because telling the story about a young man who lives in South America and gets between the enemy lines of a civil war. This 60 minute opus, finally released in 2000, contains 11 songs which are blending into each other. Thematically a gripping story with Hammond drenched parts remembering at Vanilla Fudge or Procul Harum but also containing symphonic and freakish psychedelic Kraut moments. Some line-up changes occured later on. Peters, the creative brain, responsible for the concept of 'Edmundo Lopez', sadly died at the age of 21 because of an overdose of alcohol and drugs in July 1971 and was substituted by Walter Kümmich. And then drummer Hubert Donauer left COUPLA PROG at the beginning of 1972. With two new members the band managed to record some new songs with the highlight 'Death is a great gambler, but if I win, finally I can die', written in memorial of Rolf Peters whose death had been a heavy loss for the band. So the last SWF session release by Long Hair contains a mix of songs recorded with but also without Peters including a very free interpretation of Donovan's "Season of the Witch".COUPLA PROG tried to move on for some years but stagnation and differences about the musical direction occured, members changed to other regions and finally missing motivations forced the creeeping disbanding until the end. The band's story was closed early 1976.Recommended to fans of the authentic early german progressive phase with the typical intersection of Kraut and Heavy Rock.Rivertree (Uwe Zickel). Pentagon - Die Vertreibung Der Bösen (1970)

Blues e jazz, com esporádicas intervenções de flauta, tocados por alemães da Bavária.

Black Widow - Black Widow IV (1972)

A sort of very early prog with influences from jazz, blues and rock, though of little interest today IMO. Hard rock/prog with satanic influences. Organ and flute instead of guitar. Third album features guitarist John Culley, ex-Cressida. Supposed to be very satanic-orientated a la Dr. Z or Pathfinder-era Beggars Opera. They also apparently had a very over-the-top stage show. -- Mike Ohman Early prog with satanic tendencies. Similar in sound to Cressida and co. albeit with "evil" lyrics. I have Sacrifice and is not even that bad, although it is from 1970. You can hear some quite good flute and some clarinet although is not so easily discernible. Most of songs are quite energetic as it is the hit "Come To The Sabbath" , covered or ripped by plenty of hard rock/metal bands. It’s style which was later "weighted", popularized and brought to the edge of good taste by dark metallers Mercyful Fate. Concerning lyrics, I don’t believe this guys were seriously into satanism, it’s more like a parody of the parody. I think the singer should die laughing when sing this. It’s kinda peak of satanic hard prog rock music.I don’t know, music somehow doesn’t fit to that thematics. Overall, nothing to die for, yet it has some moments. -- Nenad Kobal (Gibraltar Encyclopedia of Progressive Rock).

Odin - Odin (1972)

Odin were a band with an interesting background, possibly more interesting than their music which was rather run-of-the-mill psych and blues rock sprinkled with a bit of funky jazz. The lineup consisted of a German, Dutchman and a couple of Englishmen transplanted to Germany in the late sixties. An early formation was known Honest Truth and made their modest reputation through live shows for the most part. Odin came to be after a breakup of Honest Truth in the wake of the death of their keyboardist and the theft of their equipment. The Odin lineup included a new keyboardist (you know, because the old one was dead) named Jeff Beer, the only German and a converted guitarist. This band also concentrated on live shows, and secured a contract with Vertigo in 1972. Their self-titled and only studio release followed shortly thereafter. While the group had worked on a follow-up and had recorded tracks in a radio studio that would be released a quarter-century later, their fortunes in 1973 were rather bleak and by early 1974 the band had disbanded after less than three years together. “Life is Only” and “Turnpike Lane” were among the four tracks the band would re-record in their radio studio sessions in 1973 and while those recordings were nearly identical, the production quality of both on this record is quite a bit better. “Life is Only” appears to be the band’s magnum opus, a nearly eleven minute foray into jazz, heavy blues and psychedelic guitar riffs that is a bit undisciplined but pretty ambitious for a fledgling band of young musicians. “A Tribute to Frank” is just what the title says, but interestingly enough the short track’s keyboard and percussion bear a striking resemblance to a lot of jazzed-up New Age music I heard in the early eighties. This is also the only track of its kind on the album. “Be the Man You Are” is the other oddity, a mellow, folk-like guitar number with Beer providing dime-store philosophy backed by some decent harmony courtesy of guitarist Rob Terstall. “Gemini” is a very prototypical early seventies Hammond organ-driven heavy rock song with wailing lead guitar and a toe-tapping though not particularly ambitious drumbeat. In all the tune isn’t bad, but sounds just like at least a couple dozen other bands of that era that come to mind but who I won’t bother to list out here. The only instrumental on the album (“Eucalyptus”) is another slow number with an almost maddeningly plodding guitar and bass line that just doesn’t seem to go anywhere. I’m guessing there are no lyrics because the band couldn’t think of anything to say about the music. Me either. The band ends the album and their career with “Clown”, another hard-rocker with psych guitar much in the vein of the opening track. Again, not bad but nothing any prog fan hasn’t heard countless times before. The CD reissue has a bonus track (“Oh No”) which was also featured on the 1973 SWF session tapes released on the Long Hair label in 2007. This is another organ orgy (that sounds weird when I read those words back out loud), although I’ll admit the tune is representative of the rest of the band’s work so I suppose it fits here. I’ll say the same of this album that I did about their SWF Sessions CD – not essential by any means, but a record that will likely have some appeal to fans of heavy prog. Three stars just because I think the music is a little better than just for collectors and fans of the band. Download: http://paylesssofts.net/rs/?id=1726844

Alcatraz - Vampire State Building (1971)

Another fine Krautrock recording to come out of Hamburg. Playing through small venues [such as hostels], Alcatrazs' repertoire comprised mainly of covers of well known bands; Ten Years After, Keef Hartley Band, Savoy Brown, Vanilla Fudge, Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep. Branching out with compositions of their own, the band began listening to jazzy bands such as Soft Machine and Tony William's Lifetime. Putting two and two together their sound falls somewhere between their earlier Hard rock contingencies and Jazz, with a healthy dose of Improv. The album was recorded under peculiar circumstances. Recorded at Faust's studio in Wümme, the farm surrounding the studio was sieged by police after suspecting a crack down on a terrorist hideout. The band still managed to get through the whole recording process within the day, unfazed by the incident. While per se my interest is wanning for the Hard rock side of music, fused with part jazz, Improv and general Kraut craziness, made this pleasurable listening experience. Featuring flute, sax, piano, bongo, and the signature sound is made between the interplay between lead lines from Sax or flute enmeshed warmly by fuzz- guitar work. I'm not too fond of the vocals, but they fit the part well [only featured on two tracks, thankfully!]. I find myself enjoying the extended jazzy jams; more than the harder sections, but the album finds a nice balance, connecting the two comfortably without either becoming over bearing. I love putting this album on of the evenings, the jazz leanings give a sedated feeling. For those put off by Krautrock absurdities this album shouldn't provide any problems, it does possess some more 'out there' improvisation jams [no more than your average Art rock band], but never wonders off into meaningless noddling. While a fine album, the album doesn’t find that extra edge to captivate me into regular listening. I discovered “Vampire State Building” during my Nurse With Wound list obsession. Being relatively high up the list this was one of my earlier experiences. Interesting fact; Nurse with Wound and Stereolab covered 'Simple Headphone Mind' on a collaboration in 1997. I still have yet to hear this rendition but will definitely check it out some day. Finally the album has been re-released [long hair] via the master tapes, containing extensive linear notes. During the re-release of the album the musicians unearthed three new tracks originally recorded at Hamburg Windrose Dumot Studio, which were recorded a few months after the deadline of the full album. All three songs can be heard of the CD version.

Silberbart - 4 Times Sound Razing (1971)

This is one of the heaviest psyche albums ive heard!!! The band is a trio, bass, guitar and drums...it lacks any type of influence: electronic, jazz or eastern that could define a lot of the bands in the Kraut! genre. This is straight out heavy psyche-freak out. The albums starts off with Chub-Chub-Cherry, wich at the very beggining you know its going to blast off, the song goes on pretty typical, verse-chorus-verse.. The guitar jumping around, very foust and loud, while on the back you hear a loud and very solid bass and drum line. Brain Brain gets you going with some crazyness, its a pretty long track, for the first 3 mins you hear Hajo singing while the bass and drums go along with him very slow and soft...and then everything justs burst out! right before they start building it up again. and they go off into the heavy stuff. The next two songs: God and head tear of a drunken song kind of follow the same structure, they start like a "normal" rock song and saving all the really heavy and wild stuff for the end, same type of motion as in the first song: guitar over bass and drums, but they never get down, they always keep it interesting. They heavily maintain the rock portion of the music , all the lyrics are in english, the voice is highpitch and it gets along pretty well with the music. all the instruments are finelly equilibrated, not one covers the sound of another at any time. good sound quality also...
